A few years ago Piet Schreuders received a "hot tip" that the Lynch mystery was solved. According to this tip, Lynch was a woman painter who had lived in a small village on the south coast of England and she had recently died. He checked the rumor but it turned out to be false.

Another rumor says that J.H. Lynch was indeed a nun named Julia Lynch, who lived in Wellington, New Zealand and who was a Sister of Mercy. One part of the story is true - Julia Lynch was also an Artist, but her style is very different from J.H. Lynch as you can see here: http://www.gsc.ac.nz/lynch.htm

On January 17, 2001 Piet Schreuders received an email from Hans Knottnerus in Amsterdam who believed he had found the artist J.H. Lynch in Brisbane, Australia.
A website address was included -- a site designed and published by John H. Lynch, presenting a portfolio of his work. It consisted of portraits of beautiful women rendered in a kitschy way, certainly reminiscent of JHL in a way, but not as strong or special. In any case, this guy was too young.
The address provided no longer works, but he found it again on two other sites:

There is an artist with the name James Henry Lynch who died 1868 and is definitely not the Lynch we are looking for. Here is a website that features some of his works: http://www.npg.org.uk/live/search/person.asp?LinkID=mp53078&role=art
